The trial of a group of militant Islamists arrested last spring in southwestern Serbia will start in January. Spokeswoman for the Special Organized Crime court Judge Maja Kovacevic confirmed this for Tanjug news agency. Sandzak Wahhabis to face trial in January In the meanwhile, some Belgrade media speculate, citing unnamed sources close to the investigation centering on the 15 arrested members of the Wahhabi movement, that the suspects planned terror attacks in Belgrade. Senad Ramovic, a.k.a. Becan, Jasmin Smailovic, a.k.a. Bilal, Adnan Hota, Nedzad Memic, Fuad Hodzic, a.k.a. Fica, Mirsad Prentic, a.k.a. Beko, and Erhan Smailovic, a.k.a. Ekica, were all placed under arrest in two separate special police raids, and were on September 14 formally charged with terrorism and illegal possession and use of weapons. The group also includes Senad Vesejlovic, a.k.a. Senko, Vahid Vesejlovic, a.k.a. Abdul Vahid, Mehmed Koljsija, a.k.a. Dino, Husein Culjak, Aldin Pulic, a.k.a. Puljko, Bekto Memic, Safet Becirovic, a.k.a. Safko-Masko and Damir Berba, a.k.a. Abdurahman and/or Mesar (Butcher), who face similar indictments. Additionally, Ramovic is charged with attempted murder of an arresting police officer. Four of the Wahhabis were captured on March 17, in a camp in Mt. Ninaja, near Novi Pazar, where a large cache of arms, ammunition, explosives, military and medical equipment was also found. Police then continued to track down the remaining group members, locate and to arrest them on April 20, after a shootout that wounded one officer, and left Wahhabi group leader Ismail Prentic dead. Some Islam experts believe that Wahhabism is the most serious security threat the Balkans will face in the future.
