The trial of Zemun Clan member Aleksandar Simovic continued Wednesday with testimonies from defense witnesses. At the Special Court, they backed up the defendant’s alibi, regarding his involvement in two murders. Zemun Clan trial continues in Belgrade Branko Bajic, the defendant’s uncle, said that on July 5, 2000, he had been in Zemun at the birthday party of Milos Simovic who is still on the run, claiming that the Simovic brothers had never been out of his sight for “more than five minutes,“ and that he had left the party late in the evening. Aleksandar Simovic has already been sentenced to 35 years imprisonment for his role in the assassination of the late Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in 2003. The brothers are charged with complicity in the murder of Todor Gardasevic, who was killed the same day by co-accused Sretko Kalinic. Kalinic is being tried in absentia as he too is also still on the run. Dragana Galic and Jelena Lalic said they had attended the birthday party too. Danko Nikolic testified that he had been at the Simovic house on July 5, 2000, to buy a car, as the brothers were involved in the “car import and sales business.“ Milovan and Jelenka Simovic, the brothers’ uncle and aunt, said that the accused had been at their house in Baric on November 20, 2000, and had brought round drinks for a party, and had left at around midnight. The two witnesses added that they had no idea what the brothers were involved in, and that “it was of no interest to us.“ Goran Mitrovic substantiated these claims, saying that he had been with Simovic that day in Baric, as did Vladimir and Gordana Simovic. Milos Simovic and co-accused Vladimir Milisavljevic, who is still at large, are charged with killing Srdjana Ljujic that day, while Aleksandar Simovic is accused of being an accomplice to the murder. The 29 members of the criminal organization have altogether been charged with 15 murders, three kidnappings, and terrorist attacks on Ljubisa Buha’s Defense Road company in Zemun Field and the Democratic Party of Serbia’s headquarters in Belgrade.
