Rasim Ljajic and Vladimir Vukcevic are to discuss Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague with EU officials on October 16. Two weeks ahead of the meeting with European officials in Brussels, the head of the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, Rasim Ljajic, told B92 on Sunday that he and the war crimes prosecutor would inform European officials of the efforts Serbia was making in meeting its remaining commitments to the UN court. Ljajic on Hague cooperation: No promises They are expected to meet with European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn to discuss Hague cooperation and its impact on Serbia’s prospects of signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). According to some earlier forecasts, Serbia may initial the SAA in October. As achieving full cooperation with the Tribunal remains a condition for signing, Ljajic and Vukcevic will discuss the feasibility of this in Brussels. Ljajic said that, at the moment, he could not predict with any certainty whether or not he and Vukcevic would have anything new to say in Brussels at the meeting in two week’s time. “We are not racing against time any more. We are already suffering huge damage because some Hague fugitives are still at large. We won’t do ourselves any favors if we set deadlines for their arrest. We’ve had similar cases in the past that have usually backfired. With that in mind, we will not make any new promises, since we cannot predict when we will be able to locate them,” explained Ljajic. According to him, the authorities are doing their best to have Ratko Mladic arrested and delivered to the Hague, reiterating that, during her last visit to Belgrade, Chief Hague Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte confirmed there was a political will in Serbia to arrest the most wanted fugitive. “We have been talking a lot about reforms in Serbia since 2000. Unfortunately, citizens are not feeling the results. Reforms have not been as tangible as we would have liked and if we do not sign the SAA, it may bring about further radicalization of our country,” said Ljajic.
