Fire breaks out in Serbia's top-security prison

The Beta news agency quoted Serbian police as saying that the fire engulfed an outer part of the prison compound, sending plumes of smoke across a residential area in the capital, but that the situation was "under control." No injuries were reported.

The prison is located in a residential Belgrade area relatively close to the city center. The late Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic was held there for months before he was handed over to a UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, in 2001.

Suspects in the assassination of Đinđić, who was gunned down in March 2003, are currently held there as they await a May 23 verdict in their trial.
