Police detain 27 in “Tsar Lazar Guard” swearing-in ceremony

Police said they detained a group of 30-odd men that appeared at the event wearing black T-shirts with an emblem of the former MUP Special Operations Unit (JSO), known as the Red Berets, across their back and an inscription “Terrorism is a disease, find a cure.”

The Government disbanded the Special Operations Unite (JSO) on March 25, 2003, shortly after the assignation of prime minister Zoran Đinđić.

Former JSO commander Milorad Ulemek and his deputy Zvezdan Jovanović have been charged with having murdered the late minister.

The 2000 murder of former Serbian president Ivan Stambolić and a series of assassination attempts and kidnappings are also attributed to the Red Berets.

According to the Serbian Veterans Movement, one of the organizers of the swearing-in ceremony,  the “Saint Tsar Lazar Guard” was a first uniformed Christian militia squad, comprised of war veterans from all over Serbia willing to engage in a war in case Kosovo became independent.
