Popović explained the motion by saying that Koštunica’s testimony would serve to clarify the political background of Đinđić’s murder.He also asked the court to allow Aleksandar Simović, Borislav Mikelić, Miroslav Milošević and Vladimir Božović to testify.
Te judges will decide on these demands by March 20, the date the trial is scheduled to continue.
Popović described the first accused Milorad Ulemek a.k.a. Legija as “very close to Đinđić’s bitter political rivals”, adding that there was “awareness of joint activity” between Ulemek and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS).
“The goal of the assassination was to gain power, which in the end took place through a creeping coup. It remains unclear who the recipient of that benefit was, since protected witness Dejan Milenković’s claim that it was meant for the Radicals is strange, given that they only had 22 members of parliament at that time”, Popović said.
Deputy special prosecutor Jovan Prijić objected to these demands, supporting only the request to interview former MUP public security chief Miroslav Milošević over the circumstances of Ulemek’s surrender.
Lawyers for the defendants also objected, saying Popović had abused his process rights.
Ulemek himself said he did not support the testimonies as he did not wish to become “someone’s political prostitute”.
“This is a political game between some parties, and the whole story has only one goal, since the court will most likely reject these demands, to present the court as unwilling or without courage to determine the political motive”, Ulemek said.
