General Galić’s final judgment due on November 30

On Thursday, November 30, the Appeals Chamber will deliver its final judgment in the case against General Stanislav Galić, former commander of the VRS Sarajevo Romanija Corps. In December 2003, he was found guilty of shelling Sarajevo and terrorizing the civilian population there in a sniping campaign. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Both parties appealed the judgment. At the appellate hearing in late August, the defense made three alternative requests to the Appeals Chamber. The first was to acquit Galić and release him from detention. If this proposal is to be rejected, the defense requested the Appeals Chamber to vacate the first-instance judgment and to order a re-trial. The third option, “only as a last resort”, as the defense stressed at the appellate hearing, is that Galić receives a new, substantially milder sentence.

For its part, the prosecution wanted that General Stanislav Galić be given “the only punishment appropriate for the heinous and sinister crime of terrorizing civilians”: life sentence.
