Former "Kosovo Liberation Army" (KLA) commander Ramush Haradinaj, who was temporarily released from the Hague Tribunal, returned to Kosovo on Thursday. Haradinaj is standing trial for war crimes in The Hague. Ex-KLA war crimes suspect arrives in Kosovo TV Kosovo announced on Wednesday that the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) leader would return to Kosovo on Thursday, even though the Hague Tribunal neither confirmed nor denied the information. EULEX Spokeswoman Irina Gudeljevic told Tanjug that EULEX would at the request of the Hague Tribunal assist the court in monitoring Haradinaj’s temporary release. “Among the tasks that EULEX police will carry out are escort of Haradinaj from and to Pristina airport, meetings once a week and seizure of Haradinaj’s passport,” she explained. Gudeljevic added that EULEX was completely ready to perform its task and support the work of the Hague Tribunal. Haradinaj and two other former KLA members, Idriz Balaj and Lahi Brahimaj, are charged with crimes against humanity and violation of the laws and customs of war in Kosovo in 1998. Closing arguments should be presented on June 25-26. Haradinaj and Balaj were initially acquitted and Brahimaj was sentenced to six years in prison. The prosecution filed an appeal and the Tribunal ordered a partial retrial, on six out of initial 37 counts of the indictment. The prosecution explained that there had been significant difficulties in getting witness testimonies, since many of them said they failed to appear in the courtroom because they were afraid. TV Kosovo announced on Wednesday that the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) leader would return to Kosovo on Thursday, even though the Hague Tribunal neither confirmed nor denied the information.
