The trial of the former Republic of Srpska (RS) commander will begin on May 16 as scheduled.
Mladić’s defense attorneys filed several requests to postpone the beginning of the trial and repeated the same request at a status conference on Thursday.
The Hague indictee's defense lawyer Branko Lukić explained that the prosecution had provided certain documents in the end of April and that the defense would not have enough time to prepare the cross examination. According to him, this could have a negative effect on the fairness of the trial.
The trial will on May 16 begin with the Prosecution’s opening argument. Mladić’s defense has announced that it will not present the opening argument in this phase of the trial.
The Prosecution will have 413 witnesses but only 141 will testify in the courtroom, while others will give written statements.
Mladić is charged with 11 counts of genocide in Srebrenica and another seven municipalities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, persecution of Muslims and Croats across Bosnia, terrorizing Sarajevo residents with sniper and artillery attacks and taking UN personnel hostage from 1992 until 1995.
