SUBOTICA -- A man was murdered in the early hours of Tuesday near Subotica in a fight that broke out between two groups of illegal immigrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Belgrade-based Blic newspaper is reporting that the victim was a Pakistani citizen, who previously illegally entered Serbia intending to reach western Europe.
Another Pakistani was seriously injured during the clash.
According to the newspaper's source with the Serbian police (MUP), both groups were hiding on a farm near the northern Serbian town when the Pakistanis attacked the Afghans.
After this, the Afghans reportedly decided to retaliate, with the incident resulting in the murder. The victim died of his wounds inflicted with a knife by an unknown perpetrator. Another man is in a serious condition and is receiving medical treatment.
The police brought in one eyewitness - but "due to the language barrier, he has thus far not provided any information about the killer", said the report.
When MUP officers arrived at the farm they found none of the participants in the clash, and are now searching for them, the newspaper said.
