Several banks in Serbia have temporarily blocked their clients’ debit and credit cards due to security reasons. High-Tech Crime Prosecutor Branko Stamenkovic says that an investigation is underway. Banks block cards after suspected hacking attack The citizens whose cards have been blocked received text messages from their banks, informing them about the situation. The banks, however, have not issued an official statement. It is believed that the banks took the security measures after hackers had breached certain banks’ systems. According to daily Danas, cards of all those who made payments at gas stations that belong to one of the major gas station chains have been blocked. According to the daily, card skimming equipment was found at the gas stations. Stamenkovic told B92 on Friday morning that he had not received any report but that the prosecution was investigating the allegations. “Not a single bank, gas station or a firm or a legal entity who owns gas stations has not reported any criminal act that involves card abuse to the Special High-Tech Crime Prosecution. However, bearing in mind the media allegations we have been checking facts that we have at our disposal through Serbian police Special Department for High-Tech Crime since last night and we expect the first results of those probes during the day,” he stressed.
