Police arrest slain general's son
2 November 2009 | 09:32 | Source: Blic
BELGRADE -- One of the suspected drug dealers arrested over the weekend is the son of a former high ranking police official, it has emerged.

According to Belgrade daily Blic, Serbian police (MUP) operation codenamed Morava saw the arrest of Vojkan Stojičić, whose father Radovan Stojičić Badža held the rank of police general when he was assassinated in Belgrade in 1997.

The suspect was arrested in Niš, in southern Serbia, the newspaper reports, while he was in the apartment of a local dealer. Stojičić is believed to have sold the drugs in New Belgrade.

After Saturday's organized crime swoop that saw hundreds of people detained, police still have 93 in custody, while courts look likely to start proceedings against 71 persons.

The daily's source also explained that the raids were organized "against the street drug dealing network, those who sold the drugs to the youngest population in clubs and cafes, and in front of schools".

The operation also saw police officers detain six persons that had outstanding arrest warrants issued against them, and confiscate more than 20 kilograms of narcotics, 25 cars, 57 pieces of weapons, over a million forged U.S. dollars, EUR 120,000 and RSD 200,000.

At the same time, some sources believe that "around 100 kilograms of drugs ended up in the sewer", as the suspected dealers allegedly tried to get rid of the evidence.
