Newspaper publisher Radisav Rodić and Slavoljun Kačarević – a former editor of one of his dailies, Glas Javnosti – will remain in prison for the next month.
This was decided today by the Belgrade District Court by the investigative judge who took conducted the questioning of Rodić and Kačarević. They were arrested earlier this week.
Court spokeswoman Ivana Ramić specified that investigation was also ordered against the two on the charges of abuse of office and fraud.
She added Rodić will remain in jail because he was deemed to be a flight risk and liable to influence the witnesses during the investigation, while Kačarević was remanded in custody for fear he might influence the witnesses.
The publisher and former editor are suspected of making illegal profits in 2001 and incurring damages to Komercijalna Bank in the amount of 1,036,658mn German marks - according to the exchange rate at the time of the alleged crime.
The prosecutor’s office in Belgrade also stated on September 25 that they had issued a request to investigate Rodić, Vekomir Joksimović and Snežana Jerinić for suspicion that they submitted false documents in order to receive a loan worth RSD 22mn from the bank.
The prosecution also alleged that loan was never repaid, but this was not mentioned in the court request revealed today.
Since the investigation is closed for the public there is no information about Rodić's possible statements regarding that issue.
In mid-September, the First Municipal Prosecution in Belgrade filed its own request to the court to investigate Rodić.
The prosecution claimed that Rodić, who publishes a number of dailies and magazines, including the high circulation tabloid Kurir, evaded paying sales and income taxes in the amount of over RSD 203mn.
