12 police officers arrested in Kosovo
20 October 2009 | 09:58 | Source: B92
PRIŠTINA -- The Kosovo police, KPS, have arrested 12 police officers suspected of accepting bribes and abuse of position.

The police officers worked at the administrative line in eastern Kosovo.

There are two checkpoints on that side, one on the road from Gnjilane to Bujanovac, and another that leads to Preševo.

The police announced the arrests at an emergency press conference in Priština headed by Kosovo Police Director General Sheremet Ahmeti.

“The police officers were arrested on a warrant from the Gnjilane District Court, where they are being held in custody. The Kosovo police are conducting an internal investigation against the officers, parallel to the arrests. They have been suspended, while the case has been handed over to the Kosovo police inspectorate, which is now conducting an internal investigation,” he said.

The investigation leading to the arrests was launched over two months ago. The suspects are of different ethnicities and worked in several groups.

Kosovo police officials have not given any details on the suspects, except that they are suspected of accepting bribes and abusing their positions.

Priština media say that the suspects are members of a unit responsible for patrolling crossings along the administrative line.
