Public prosecutor applauds arrest of municipal president

BELGRADE -- Public Prosecutor Slobodan Radovanović says the arrest of Aranđelovac Municipal President Radosav Šabić proves the state’s determination to tackle corruption.

Švabić, a member of the Serb Radical Party, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of abuse of office and of embezzling some EUR 500,000 of public funds.

Radovanović said that his arrest was proof that everyone would be treated equally under the law.

“This is proof that the state is determined and ready to fight corruption and organized crime as was promised,” the prosecutor said.

“I must stress that the state must be united and must work in concert. I expect the courts now to play their role in the fight, because neither the police, the prosecution, nor other state bodies will be able to triumph alone, not unless everyone is working towards the same goal,” Radovanović said.

Local Aranđelovac-based businessman Aleksandar Ćirić was also arrested together with Švabić in the operation.

Švabić is accused of signing a deal with Ćirić’s company in 2007 for the gasification of Aranđelovac, through which he was able to embezzle public funds, while police say that he struck a similar deal with another company hired to build and equip a local nursery.
