BELGRADE -- Police have arrested Aranđelovac Municipal President Radosav Švabić on suspicion of abuse of office, according to the Interior Ministry.

Along with Švabić, businessman Aleksandar Ćirić (32), owner of the Ćira company, was also arrested.

Police stated that they were suspected of abuse of office, adding that charges had also been pressed against an Israeli national.

“There is a evidence that Radovan Švabić signed a contract with the Ćira company in mid-2007, where he accepted fairly unfavorable payment conditions, as a result of which this company won a public purchase tender for the supply of gas to Aranđelovac,” a statement read.

Under the agreement, the municipality of Aranđelovac pledged to pay off a loan taken out by Ćira from a financial organization in the British Virgin Islands, whereby the municipality had to pay interest in the region of EUR 192,000, MUP stated.

Švabić struck a similar deal with the AD MDSE company for building and equipping a nursery in Aranđelovac, whereby the municipality pledged to pay off a loan to a bank in Zurich through the AD MDSE company, including interest of EUR 371,000, the police stated.

In total, the Aranđelovac municipality incurred some EUR 563,000 in damages from these scams.

Švabić and Ćirić were brought before the municipal investigative judge for questioning today.
