Serbia to mark Anti-Corruption Day
9 December 2008 | 09:53 | Source: Beta
BELGRADE -- Today marks International Anti-Corruption Day in commemoration of December 9, 2003, when the UN Convention Against Corruption was signed.

This year the spotlight is on so-called whistle-blowers, personnel who highlight corruption and other irregularities in the work of the institutions that employ them.

Transparency International Program Director in Serbia Nemanja Nenadić said that Serbia would mark that day without any visible progress registered in combating corruption, even though the issue has been raised to the high level of a state priority.

Nenadić said that parliament had adopted very important anti-corruption laws this year, but that the problem was that they were not being implemented “as prescribed or are being applied selectively.“

International Anti-Corruption Day is being marked in Belgrade with a Transparency International conference on combating corruption and protecting personnel who report corruption.
