Egner is suspected of participating in war crimes committed at the Semlin (Old Fairground) concentration camp in Belgrade. Serbia to take over Egner case The U.S. Justice Department has launched proceedings to revoke his citizenship, and representatives of the U.S. Office of War Crimes Issues will come to Belgrade in September to discuss Egner’s extradition to Serbia. The U.S. authorities suspect him of being responsible for the deaths of 11,164 Jews, Serbs and Roma, at the Semlin death camp. "We’ll exchange all the evidence we have with the Americans, and we will talk about trying Egner in Serbia. The War Crimes Prosecution has, through the Ministry of Justice, already sent notes to the U.S. Office of War Crimes Issues, which replied that it would present the entire file to Serbia. Notes have also been sent to the Berlin and Munich archives, as well as to Russia, to see whether they have any documentation regarding Egner,” says a source of Belgrade daily Blic. It is certain that there is evidence against Egner in the Munich archives, where all the German coded messages sent via the Enigma machine are kept, as well as in the American archives on the Gestapo in Berlin. The Munich archives contain messages that the Allies decoded, including correspondence between Nazi high command and agents in Yugoslavia before and during the occupation, as well as messages sent to the German occupation forces and the Gestapo in occupied Serbia. Egner was born in Crvenka, a town in Vojvodina, but suddenly moved to Belgrade in September 1940, right before the war. A Blic journalist rang Egner yesterday in Seattle, his current place of residence, and asked him about the possible trial in Serbia. "All I can say is that I’m completely innocent, and that I never harmed anyone during the course of the war. I can’t tell you anything more. Talk to my lawyer,” said Egner.
