Vecernje Novosti writes that UNMIK covered up the trafficking of human organs in Kosovo and Albania in 1999. The daily writes that the investigation into trafficking was doomed to failure while it was being led by UNMIK. "UNMIK covered up organ trafficking" This is confirmed by evidence that the daily obtained, pointing to the involvement of UNMIK officials in these activities, notably former senior official Jose Pablo Baraybar, who was chief of the Missing Persons and Forensics Office. The daily has firm evidence that points to Baraybar being familiar with what was happening in Albania, but that he stopped the investigation. According to unofficial information, he is now on the run in Argentina, the daily states. Novosti’s source, a former UNMIK official who participated in the investigation and wants to remain anonymous, described to the daily some of the details that UMNIK uncovered. “Former Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte asked UNMIK to begin an investigation into organ trafficking in 2003,” the daily writes. “At the time, there were six or seven UNMIK units looking into various crimes, and the Tribunal had more than 50 investigators of its own in Kosovo, so there was no shortage of people who could have led an inquiry,” the paper states. Asked how the Tribunal found out about the trafficking, the source said that there had been four Albanians involved in the whole operation. They took UNMIK and Tribunal investigators to the “yellow house” and even showed them the place where the remains of victims whose organs were unfit for harvesting had been buried. “But, those sites were never excavated! That clearly shows that someone very powerful had a great interest in making sure these crimes were never uncovered,” the source told Vecernje Novosti.
