The trial of Stanko Subotic and others suspected of participating in the cigarette smuggling ring of the 1990s, could be delayed. Subotic was arrested in Moscow yesterday. The Special Sector of the Belgrade District Court stated that the trial, scheduled to begin on May 19, could be pushed back until Subotic is extradited. Tobacco Mafia trial could be postponed The Special Organized Crimes Court stated that the trial, scheduled to begin on May 19, could be pushed back until Subotic is extradited. “Since he has been arrested and he will most likely be extradited , there is a theoretical chance that the trial could start on May 19 – because he is still not formally available to our state institutions – so if the trial does start, it could be stopped in order for Subotic to put together his defense team, which would postpone the trial. I cannot say exactly, the trial chamber will decide,” Special Court spokeswoman Maja Kovacevic told B92. Stanko Subotic is believed to be the leader of the criminal group that smuggled large amounts of tobacco products into Serbia in the 1990s. He was arrested yesterday on an international warrant at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. Subotic will be held in custody in Russia until his extradition to Serbia is organized by Serbia’ judicial bodies.
