The move was announced at the presentation last night of a project entitled “Against Human Trafficking”. Anti – trafficking network in works The Fenomen NGO is running the project, and the network will be set up in Kraljevo, Novi Pazar, Pozarevac, Sabac, Kikinda and Sremska Mitrovica. President of the Organization against Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Vesna Stanojevic said that according to recent data, human trafficking in Serbia was most prevalent around the Novi Pazar area. “The aim of the local network is to get people to recognize the problem of human trafficking in Serbia, because although we know the problem exists, not enough work has been done about it,” said Stanojevic. She stressed that so far 244 girls had visited the only victims advisory bureau in Serbia. It was pointed out that thus far, no cases of human trafficking had been registered in Kraljevo, although domestic violence was on the rise, resulting in 40 criminal complaints being lodged, a third up on the same period last year. Fenomen member Dragana Veljovic said that in the last four months since the opening of an SOS telephone helpline, 252 women had called, including ten girls between the ages of 18 and 30. “90 percent of them complained of physical violence suffered at the hands of family members, while 10 percent had been subjected to psychological abuse,” said Veljovic. Fenomen has submitted a request to the Kraljevo municipal assembly to be allocated land on which to build a safe house. Stanojevic felt that safe houses were the best solution for victims of domestic violence, incidents which were leading ever more frequently to tragic consequences. “We’re working on setting up three safe houses in Belgrade. At the end of this month we’re opening our first safe house in Belgrade, built with the help of a B92 campaign,” she concluded. The Interior and Labor and Social Policy Ministries have approved the NGO’s project.
