New investigation against Sandor Kepiro

Sandor Kepiro, 93, was convicted before Hungarian Courts in 1944 and 1946 but never served his sentence, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center which specializes in exposing Nazi war criminals.

Kepiro was convicted for his role as a Captain in Hungarian forces that had took part in the slaying of more than 1,200 Serbs, Jews and Romas in Novi Sad on January 23, 1942, during the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia in World War II.

The Budapest District court said on March 1 the 1944 conviction of Sandor Kepiro sentencing him to 10 years of imprisonment cannot be enforced since the document to testify for the 1944 verdict was lost and couldn't  be retrieved.

Kepiro, who returned to Hungary in 1966 from Argentina, rejected all war crimes charges, claiming on several occasions that the 1944 trial was rigged and that a retrial organized shortly afterward justly annulled the sentence.
