The trial against the 35-year-old leader of the radical ethnic Albanian Self-Determination Movement was scheduled for Tuesday. Police get warrant to arrest Kurti He is charged with leading riots in February 2007 in which two persons died of injuries suffered as protesters clashed with international police in Pristina. Kurti was not present at the hearing, although the presence of the defendant is compulsory, as the first and foremost form of procedural guarantee for the defendant himself, EULEX stated. According to the EU mission officials, Kurti is accused of participating in a crowd committing a criminal offence; participating in a group obstructing official persons in performing official duties; and calling for resistance. The Self-Determination Movement opposes UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and advocates that ethnic Albanians in the province have a right to a referendum on "unconditional independence", without any limitations that were included in the plan of UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari. In its campaigns, the movement often turns to vandalism against facilities and property of UNMIK and EULEX.
