"Chief organizer" of attack on French nationals arrested
19 September 2009 | 13:55 -> 17:47 | Source: B92, Tanjug
BELGRADE -- The “main organizer” of the attack on French nationals on Thursday, and ten accomplices have been arrested and remanded into custody for a period of 48 hours.

State prosecution spokesperson Tomo Zorić said that 11 people responsible for the brutal attack on the French football fans before the Partizan-Toulouse match on Thursday were arrested.

“It is clear that we will ask for maximum prison sentences depending on the qualifications of the crimes that they will be accused of committing,” Zorić said.

“The prosecution wants to state that it will react severely against all types of violence and endangerment of the security of Serbian citizens, and will do everything to make sure that Belgrade and Serbia are safe places for all Serbian citizens,” he added.

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said that the arrests could continue as the investigation into the attack unfolds.

Dačić said that the police will take measures against all individuals and groups that threaten the safety of Serbian and foreign citizens.

“The state will deal with all who believe that they can scare the state institutions with violence and damage Serbia’s image in the world,” Dačić said.

The government stated that it supports the actions of the Interior Ministry and the arrests that are being made.

The Frenchman beaten most severly in the attack remains in critical condition.
