Putin on Crimea: Historical injustice corrected

"When we defend our interests, then we go through to the end," he said.

Explaining why Crimea was taken over, Putin said it was "a historical mistake that Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave Crimea, which was a part of Russia, to Ukraine in 1954."

At the time, Putin added, this was "a symbolic gesture," considering that Russia and Ukraine were both within the same country, the Soviet Union.
