NATO "respects Serbia's military neutrality"

"I firmly believe in the potential of Serbia-NATO relations," Tanjug quoted the NATO official, who added that "just like any other country, Serbia is a part of the European family and NATO wishes to maintain close cooperation with it just as it is cooperating with all its European partners."

He said he hoped the signing of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) would contribute to an improved understanding and cooperation between Serbia and NATO.

Through the Partnership for Peace Program and IPAP, Serbia and NATO can learn together according to the same standards and be ready to provide assistance promptly and efficiently in any emergency situation, Bartels said.

The delegation of the NATO Military Committee headed by Bartels arrived in Serbia on Thursday for a two-day visit.

Ahead of the meeting, Dikovic said that Serbia's cooperation with NATO was "in the common interest of preserving peace."

"Our country and NATO have in the past 16 years passed a long way, from (NATO's 1999) aggression and conflict to cooperation. Each point on this road is important, but we firmly stand on that road - that the future cooperation between NATO and Serbia, as a militarily neutral country, is in the joint interest of preserving peace," he said.

Besides, Dikovic noted that the individual plan and Partnership for Peace standards will be implemented in a way that will not endanger the country's military neutrality or the army's "distinctiveness."

According to him, IPAP is not "mandatory" and instead, "Serbia chooses the goals itself." He described as "very useful" those standards related to fighting against terrorism, "cyber threats," and illegal migrations.

Dikovic also thanked NATO's KFOR force deployed in Kosovo and Metohija, stressing Serbia sees it as "a guarantor of stability and safety."
