"We have gathered to show that we do not agree with the policy that envisages sale of public goods through secret agreements and transfer of agricultural land to Arab and other investors," Pajtic, whose party is in opposition in the national assembly, said.

He underscored that "the debt created by the current government in just three months of the year exceeds the debt created by all the governments in the period from 2000 to 2012."

Serbia's public debt from December 2010 to mid-2012 increased by EUR 1.3 billion and from January to March 2015, public debt increased by EUR 1.6 billion, which is by EUR 300 million more than in the entire period from 2000 to 2012, he noted.

Pajtic announced a major DS gathering in Belgrade "against the regime" on April 25, on the day when Vucic's Serb Progressive Party (SNS) intends to organize a gathering in Novi Sad. The SNS has been attempting for some time to force early elections in the province.

The DS gathering on Sunday was "on the verge of turning into an incident," Tanjug reported, and added that "a number of citizens who disagree with the DS policy also gathered at Trg Slobode (Freedom Square) in Novi Sad, and mutual verbal provocations occurred."

The police had to intervene to prevent physical altercations, the daily Vecernje Novosti reported.

The DS immediately afterwards issued a statement accusing the SNS of organizing its members and supporters and sending them "to disperse the DS gathering in downtown Novi Sad."
