Teachers "radicalize" strike, set to organize protests

The rally in Belgrade will start at noon, and protesters will walk to the Serbian government and the Ministry of Education buildings.

The strike was launched on November 17, but previously involved cutting the length of classes.

The striking teachers demand to be exempt from pay cuts in the public sector, and also want establishment of pay grades.

"We decided to radicalize the strike because we believe that negotiations with the Ministry of Education have reached a serious impasse, and we hope to refresh them in this way," union representative Dragan Matijevic said.

He added that there would be no classes in schools on strike only on Monday, while later they would resume with cutting classes from 45 to 30 minutes.

Minister of Education Srdjan Verbic, meanwhile, has described the action taken on Monday as "unlawful."

His ministry announced that partial or complete strike was ongoing in 212, or 12 percent out of Serbia's 1,768 schools.
