She noted that as an individual who is constantly warning against the dangers of hate speech, radical stands, nationalism and its negative consequences for the society, she fiercely condemns all those who use war rhetoric to achieve their political goals, including the indicted leader of the Serb Radical Party.

Fajon expressed deep belief that in view of the current situation, the resolution adds fuel to the flames which should not serve anyone's interests at this point. She added that the resolution puts Šešelj in the spotlight of media attention which is precisely the opposite of what EP should be doing.

Fajon underscored that EP should not be a place where solutions to conflicts from the past would be sought and internal policy topics would be imposed.

The Slovenian MEP said that she believes Serbia is on the right track when it comes to European integration and expressed the hope that the country will continue to support the policy.

In the resolution adopted on Thursday, the Hague Tribunal was called to reevaluate the decision to temporarily release Šešelj and calls on the Serbian authorities to distance themselves from his statements.

Earlier, member of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the EU-Serbia SAPC Eduard Kukan stated:

"First of all, I fully understand the evil of wartime rhetoric, hate speech against neighboring countries and minorities, especially in the Western Balkans. Therefore, I will always fight for policies of peace and reconciliation. Šešelj's public appearances go exactly against these principles, which we have supported and invested a great amount of political capital into."

"However, our response should not create more tension. Especially by giving this accused war criminal more attention than he deserves. Instead, we should clearly support those who believe that wartime rhetoric should not have place in Serbia or anywhere in the region," he added.

"It is unfortunate that Šešelj's radical statements have been given such unnecessary attention by media and some politicians. I only hope it is not be used it as an instrument of further political tensions in the region," Kukan said in a statement, and concluded:

"Finally, this resolution is not meant to give instructions to the ICTY. It is an independent international body with a clear mandate from the United Nations. It is for these reasons that I hesitate to support this resolution."
