The proposed amendments will soon be sent to parliament and were presented by Interior Minister Nebojša Stefanović, who stressed their goal was "to save lives."

Prevention and education will also be worked on more vigorously, he announced.

A working group, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Zorana Mihajlović, was recently set up to come up with the proposals, in response to the increasing number of traffic accidents that claim the lives of mostly young people.

The suggestions that will be debated in parliament include banning persons under the age of 21 from driving from 23:00 until 05:00 hours, and setting to zero their permitted blood alcohol level.

"In many countries around the world people younger than 21 face restrictions when entering clubs and there is a reason for that. Belgrade is advertising itself as one of the 'hardest partying cities' in Europe, while at the same time in Zagreb, Ljubljana, Vienna, Zurich... the streets are almost empty after 22:00 hours," noticed Assistant Transport Minister Saša Stojanović.

He added that in Belgrade, meanwhile, young people go out only after 23:00, "when there is a lot of alcohol and drugs in the streets."

"As wide-reaching as possible campaign is needed when it comes to education, and this is where families, preschools and schools play an important role," Stojanović said.
