Security Forum: World is not in new Cold War
President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States Karen Donfried noted that the world has changed significantly over the past several decades but that it is not on the verge of a new Cold War.Former advisor to US President Barack Obama on European security affairs Donfried said that the Americans and the Europeans are facing the greatest challenge since the Cold War due to the current crisis in Ukraine, which added to the tension in the relations between Russia and the West.
Donfried voiced her disagreement with the policy of severing all ties with Russia, noting that a way should be found for the country to choose a different path from the one it is taking now.
Commenting on the Ukrainian crisis, Director of the Russian Situation Analysis Center Vladimir Baranovsky said that history has shown that there is a way out of every crisis, including the current one, although, as he added, it failed to provide models for the resolution of similar issues.
The solution does not lie in a “reset” of Russian-US relations, as can frequently be heard among experts, he said.
I am very much concerned about the situation in Ukraine and it is a tragic development, he said, adding that this is the first major crisis on European soil since the end of the Cold War.
It is very important for Serbia to become a member of the European Union, said Francois Heisbourg, special advisor at the Foundation for Strategic Research, speaking about geopolitics.
He stressed that Serbia should not succumb to the temptation to join one of the Cold War blocs, or Tito's bloc of non-aligned countries.
This year's Forum, with Tanjug as its media sponsor, has attracted the most attention so far from the public in Serbia and abroad, organizers say. The Forum is organized by the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, European Movement in Serbia, and Belgrade Center for Security Policy.
