Hundreds evacuated from flood-hit areas in east

Three people are listed as missing, it has been reported unofficially.

More than 150 liters per square meter that fell yesterday caused flash floods and landslides from nearby hills to damage roads and bridges in many areas, cutting off access to settlements.

An elderly woman was found dead in village of Podvrška, but according to authorities, the cause of her death is unknown at this time.

Members of Serbia's military and MUP's Gendarmerie unit are taking part in the rescue efforts. The worst situation Tuesday morning was in the village of Tekija, where rescue efforts are under way and residents are running out of drinking water and food.

MUP Emergency Sector chief Predrag Marić was in Tekija overnight, and told reporters that it was "a miracle" more people did not die considering the situation. He added that "warnings had been issued, but you cannot predict this amount of water, that so much land will move and trigger landslides."

An emergency situation is in force in Kladovo, as well as nearby Majdanpek and Negotin where there have been no victims or need to evacuate citizens.

The Đerdap hydro-power plant on the Danube is not in danger, although a landslide has been reported nearby.

Heavy rainfall, rocks and mud are blocking all roads leading to Kladovo, drivers have been warned.
