Ambassador: Italy supports opening of chapters

Italy believes that candidate countries must be encouraged to carry out internal reforms and that the EU needs to show credibility and clearly demonstrate commitment to the enlargement process in order to motivate the candidate countries, Manzo said.

Opening the negotiation chapters by the end of the year would serve both purposes, he said.

"The official agenda of the presidency makes this technically possible, and Italy, which currently holds the EU presidency, is willing to engage to make it happen - of course, this mostly depends on Serbia and its ability to achieve results with the same resolve as demonstrated so far," Manzo said.

He expressed confidence that Serbia will show that resolve during the upcoming three-day visit to Belgrade by members of the Council of the European Union Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession to the Union (COELA).

At the initiative of Italy as holder of the EU presidency, the COELA delegation will pay a first-ever visit to Belgrade on Wednesday to meet with officials of Serbian institutions, including government and parliament.
