Serbs in north "not increasingly happy with EULEX"

"Neither us mayors from northern Kosovo and Metohija, and especially the people who live in the north, are satisfied with EULEX. Of course we all stand for the rule of law and are committed to getting free of the burden of organized crime, drug dealers and perpetrators of serious crimes, but these issues are not address by EULEX's courts and prosecution," Rakić was quoted as saying.

According to him, the EU mission "stepped outside of its mandate" and is not status-neutral.

"The prosecution and the courts must be independent in their work and we do not want to influence them, but we ask that Serbs have the same rights as other defendants who are often treated leniently and even forgiven when they escape from the detention unit," he added.

EULEX chief Bernd Borhart told the Belgrade daily Politika that satisfaction with the work of the EU mission among the people in northern Kosovo was "increasing."
