British ambassador denies western "ultimatums"

Serbia can have a very positive role in regional stability in the Western Balkans, British Ambassador to Serbia Denis Keefe has said.

British ambassador denies western "ultimatums"

In an interview published in Monday's issue of the Belgrade-based daily Politika, Keefe declined to comment on a diplomatic scandal following a statement by U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby or the subsequent explanation by Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić

that Serbia recognizes the integrity of Ukraine, including the Crimea.

Asked whether the situation was in fact a way of stepping up the diplomatic pressure aimed at getting Serbia to alter its position on Russia, the British ambassador said that aligning Serbia's foreign policy with that of the EU is an important topic and an ongoing process that will be discussed further.

"First of all, Prime Minister Vučić has expressed the Serbian government's position clearly enough in saying that Serbia respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine, including the Crimea - he also said that the language of ultimatums cannot be used in discussions, and I agree with him," Keefe said and added:

"Also, I think that the policy of the Serbian government is clear - Serbia is on its European path and it has good relations with Russia, which I think is reasonable."

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić's statement that recent events surrounding the crash of a passenger plane in Ukraine are totally unacceptable is in line with expectations, the British ambassador said.

Commenting on Serbia's upcoming OSCE chairmanship in 2015, he said that it is yet another example of where Serbia can play a positive role in the broader region.

Keefe expressed hope that Serbia's OSCE chairmanship will be successful, but noted that it will not be an easy task.
