3,000 asylum seekers in Serbia so far this year

Serbia’s Assistant Commissioner for Refugees Ivan Gerginov said Wednesday that the number of asylum seekers was steadily increasing in the country.

3,000 asylum seekers in Serbia so far this year

Gerginov told Belgrade-based TV Pink channel that the number of asylum seekers had gone up from 44 in 2008 to more than 3,000 last year.

Gerginov indicated that from 2008 to 2010, most of the asylum seekers were from Afghanistan and Somalia, and flare-ups of war in Africa were increasing the number of Kenyans seeking refuge in our country.

The number of Afghans, Palestinians and Pakistanis seeking asylum is still high, he added.

Gerginov said that the growth in the number asylum seekers in Serbia called for increasing the existing capacity and providing new facilities.
