Israeli diplomatic missions targeted by demonstrators

The protesters also threw stones and waved Palestinian flags in front of the Israeli embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara, smashing windows on the building.

The police in Ankara did not intervene, according to AFP.

In Istanbul, the protesters chanted "Murderer Israel, get out of Palestine" and wrote several slogans on the walls of the consulate.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu strongly condemned the Israeli ground invasion of Gaza, pointing out on his Twitter account that the move represented "a test of the conscience of humanity".

Davutoglu has called for emergency meetings of the UN Security Council, the Human Rights Council of the UN, and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, reports AP.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also fiercly opposed the Israeli bombing of Gaza stating that these operations threaten efforts to improve Turkish-Israeli relations.
