"We consider it absurd to comment on such allegations," reported the newspaper Vijesti, quoting the Russian embassy's response to the question of whether Russia "has its spies in Montenegro."

The embassy also denied American claims there were "25 to 50" Russian intelligence officers in the Balkan country.

According to the AP, "the infiltration of Russian spies in Montenegro" was the main reason why the country will not receive an invitation to join NATO as a member, during a summit to be held in Wales in September.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Đukanović has also denied the claims made in the agency's report.

Đukanović said that "no one ever, in official talks with representatives of NATO and the U.S. administration, mentioned Russian intelligence officers."
