Vučić says Serbia will do its homework

The Serbian prime minister added that the country should "do its homework" in the next three or four years, and then it will be up to the EU member states to decide whether to allow it to join as a member.

Speaking about the economy, he said: "It is not an easy situation. We have been delaying all reforms we dare to say centuries, but actually it is decades, and now we have to do almost everything to create better business environment."

According to him, "new privatization, bankruptcy and construction permit laws are set to be pushed through."

"Yes we are on the EU path, but we need to do a lot more to make it more attractive place for foreign investors, from Western society and we are capable of doing that," Vučić said.

Asked whether it was perhaps better to "wait and see" how healthy the EU really is - considering there are those who think it could have another banking crisis - Vučić said "the philosophy of Serbia and his own" are "quite the opposite":

"We will not wait for any kind of support or help of the EU. We need to deal with difficult questions. That is very difficult for us because we are facing one of the biggest fiscal deficits in Europe, which means we will have to take fiscal consolidation measures that will be difficult for our people."
