"DS was not asked to join government"

“We expressed concern regarding many of the announced ideas and measures as they could lead to a deterioration in people's living standards and lay-offs,” Đilas told reporters after consultations with President Nikolić concerning creation of the new Serbian government.

The DS leader said that he does not see an investment process offered that could lead to an economic recovery in the country.

Đilas said that he told Nikolić that the Democrats are opposed to the idea of rotating the parliament speaker position between MPs of the ruling and opposition parties on an annual basis.

He pointed out that he asked the president to have the idea given up as it would be frivolous to do entertain it and degrading for the legislature.

Asked if the DS could be a party that the opposition would gather around, Đilas said that the Democrats could play such a role for anyone who is opposed to those in power, given they have similar political views. He added, however, that is unclear who the opposition is and who the government is in Serbia at the moment.

Asked if he could cooperate in parliament with New Democratic Party (NDS) leader Boris Tadić, Đilas said that his party and himself can cooperate "with anybody and everyone, including the NDS."
