The hypocrisy of Western countries in response to the the crisis in Ukraine is "off the scale," says Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Russian FM accuses West of hypocrisy

A deadline expired on Monday morning set by the authorities in Kiev for the surrender of weapons and unblocking of local administration buildings in towns in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian special forces exchanged fire on Sunday with pro-Russian militias near the town of Slavyansk, in the Donetsk area.

Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov said that there were casualties on both sides in what he said was "an anti-terrorist operation." According to him, an officer of the Ukrainian Security Service was among the dead.

Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych accused the government in Kiev of "coordinating its actions" with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting last night about the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine. Representatives of Western countries blamed Russia for the tensions in eastern Ukraine, while Moscow urged Kiev to "stop using force against the Ukrainian people."
