Obama and Merkel discuss more sanctions

"The president said that the U.S., EU and other partners in the world should be prepared to respond to a further Russian escalation with additional sanctions," said the White House.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that the U.S. has accused Russia of using its energy reserves "as an instrument of coercion" to control Ukraine.

Russia has warned European countries that it might interrupt the supply of gas because of Ukraine's debt.

NATO has, simultaneously, "confirmed the authenticity of satellite images showing the arrival of the Russian military reinforcements to the border with Ukraine in recent weeks."

A Russian official said earlier that these recordings showed a military exercise held in August last year.

NATO claims that the video, which was released yesterday, shows about 40,000 Russian soldiers near the border and that it was taken in late March and early April. It also contains images of sophisticated combat aircraft and helicopters.

NATO later released additional footage, some of which was recorded in 2013, and other parts in early 2014, in order to show that there were no soldiers there before March.

The western military alliance said the new footage shows that it is not true that the footage was old as Russia and claimed, and that there was no evidence of military activity in these areas in 2013 and 2014.
