Russia satisfied with Serbian position - ambassador

He stressed that Russia cannot be intimidated by sanctions and that Moscow and Belgrade should decide about their interests by themselves.
Chepurin recalled that the European Union and Russia have a daily trade turnover of one billion euros, and added this was a reason "to be smart."

He pointed out that when Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and later jointed Russia, procedures were fully complied with, and the process was conducted in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, while this principle was not respected in the case of Kosovo.

"If we are to believe some high-ranking officials, there was also a referendum in Kosovo," he said, adding that one of the diplomatic rules was to "speak about something if it is in your interest, and keep quiet if it is not."

The ambassador said that it was in the interest of both Russia and the EU for Ukraine be out of the crisis as soon as possible, and that a solution was needed for this, wondering at the same time who found such an outcome was not in their interest.

Politika daily journalist and commentator Miroslav Lazanski took part in the same panel discussion and said that the west "failed to invite Russia to the EU and NATO," in which case Crimea would not have joined Russia, adding he believed that Crimea had more legal arguments for independence than Kosovo.

Political analyst Dragoljub Anđelković said that differences between Crimea and Kosovo were obvious, since in the case of Crimea there was no violence, while Kosovo was "separated through aggression and occupation."

Chepurin concluded that "we live in a world of double standards" - something he said was confirmed with the examples of Crimea and Kosovo, but also with many other crises worldwide.
