"New resolution reasonable proposal"

"I think a new government will have to come up with a strategy in order to continue negotiations ... I think the new assembly will have to declare itself on that because it is apparent that we are entering into the sphere of issues that are not fully regulated or are perhaps regulated differently with the resolution of the previous assembly," Nikolić said.

Political analyst Dragomir Anđelković said that one should not expect a change in Serbia's policy towards Kosovo, but considers the president's call "reasonable."

"If there are some new elements, attempt to introduce the army of Kosovo, a change of the EULEX mandate, an answer should be ready. That is reasonable. The new parliament should confirm the policy in order to avoid disagreements of those who play a leading role in the assembly, " he told B92.

President Nikolić also suggested that current events in the world shed new light to the solving of the Kosovo issue.

"A lot is happening in the world that might affect the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, which could shake the confidence Priština, and lead Belgrade to think about whether to offer a final solution which would be consistent with the Constitution, international law and reality."

Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simić thinks that if this was said with Ukraine in mind, the crisis in that country cannot significantly change the situation in Kosovo.

"That position will not change. Our interest is not to get involved in all that too much, because the situation in Kosovo can only change for the worse for Serbs. Because the West will then draw there analogies there... It's a conflict of big countries, in which small ones, such as Serbia, always lose," said he.

Both agreed that Serbia should not make any hasty moves in relation to the crisis in Ukraine. Anđelković advised avoiding confrontation with any side, while Simić argued that in defining its stance, Serbia must take into account its large energy dependence on Russia.
