Serbia and Cyprus enjoy "unbreakable ties"

Both officials emphasized "the unbreakable ties between the two countries" and reiterated that "neither Serbia nor Cyprus would ever concede a part of their territory," the Serbian president's office said on Monday.

Nikolić noted that Serbian-Cypriot bilateral ties were an example of friendship, understanding and mutual support, said the statement.

"Our two countries are not connected by land or by sea, our ties are not territorial, but they are unbreakable,” Nikolić stressed.

He pointed out that Serbia "faced numerous challenges in a short period of time and successfully solved many of them."

Nikolić underlined that the issue of Kosovo and Metohija is still unresolved, as well as the economic crisis that has deeply affected the country.

"We will talk with Albanians, cooperate, build our friendship, but we will never recognize the independence of Kosovo and Metohija, just as you will never concede a part of your territory,“ said Nikolić.

Serbia greatly appreciates the support of Cyprus in the setting of the date for the beginning of EU entry negotiations and its principled stance not to recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, he emphasized.

Kasoulides "praised the honesty and vision of Nikolić in tackling crucial challenges for the future of Serbia, and noted that the Cypriot EU path was as difficult as the Serbian," the statement issued by Nikolić's office said.

"We are a small country that knows its rights and knows how to use them to defend our interests," said Kasoulides.

"When it comes to your country, which has a similar problem as we do, we also made an effort to prevent any new conditions from being placed before you," the Cypriot foreign minister said.

He underlined that "imposing additional conditions on the side that has bravely entered negotiations and already signed an agreement would aggravate the situation and jeopardize stability in the Balkans."

"Serbia is the factor of stability in the Balkans, and a strong Serbia in the European Union would contribute to the stability throughout Europe," noted the Cypriot minister.
