BELGRADE Tomislav Nikolic says Serbia is proud of its anti-fascist tradition in World War II, and will not allow for historical revisionism and relativization of crimes. "As the Jewish nation was subjected to stigmatization, so some historians and politicians today, backed by the media, are trying defame the whole Serbian nation," the president said as he addressed an event in Belgrade to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. President warns about historical revisionism Nikolic said that "some historians, backed by international media," are now trying to pin the blame for the start of the First World War on Serbia. "They invite us to stop dealing with history, forget about it and turn to the future. We should not do that because without history there is no future, because without history we do not know who we are and we cannot build our future," said Nikolic. The Serbian president added that crimes like the Holocaust should be constantly brought up. "The fact that most of the culprits were found and convicted does not mean that what was, in its character and scope, one of the greatest crimes against humanity in the history of civilization should not continue to be considered," Nikolic said. He stated that Serbia to this day failed to compile a full list of those killed in the Second World War, but noted that more than 16 percent of the Serb population was killed in the areas of the former Yugoslavia. The ceremony at the Old Fairgrounds memorial on Monday was also attended by representatives of the Jewish community, the City Administration of Belgrade, and associations commemorating the victims of the war, as well as Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Joseph Levy. On behalf of the government, the gathering was attended by Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic, Culture Minister Ivan Tasovac, and Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlovic. (Tanjug) Beta
