BELGRADE Christian churches that use the Gregorian calendar are this Wednesday celebrating Christmas, the day that Christians mark as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hocevar served midnight mass in Belgrade last night, that was attended by believers, representatives of the state, other religious communities, and diplomats. Christmas celebrated by Catholics and Protestants "Let us congratulate each other a merry, blessed, and honorable Christmas, I sincerely wish peace to all, and to our brothers and sisters who celebrate according to the Julian calendar, the eastern rite, I say in a brotherly manner: Peace from God, Christ is born," the archbishop said. He spoke in reference of the fact Serbia's majority Orthodox Christians will mark the holiday two weeks later, on January 7. Hocevar aslo thanked the Serbian president, his advisers, the government and parliament for messages congratulating the holiday, and said he wished them peace, blessings, and success. The archbishop is today serving mass in the town of Smederevo, and later in Belgrade. On Tuesday, he sent a Christmas message to the believers of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Belgrade and all churches celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ according to the Gregorian calendar. Archbishop Hocevar sent special greetings to the believers of the Serbian Orthodox Church and its head, Patriarch Irinej. He reflected on the values of the Christian family, the engine of all togetherness and unity, and, in particular, of the authentic Christian civilization and culture. "The experience of the past two thousand years shows that a healthy family, a healthy community or healthy society cannot exist without the energy of Christ or without Christian values," he said in the message. It is our duty to ensure, through a timely metamorphosis and acts of charity, that the entire human race becomes a healthy family, Hocevar said. As opposed to these Christian ideals, Hocevar highlighted the position of the family in modern society, in particular the position of children, who are manipulated, used in drug-trafficking chains, prostitution, terrorism, as well as for the purpose of spreading hatred and lies.
