Ex-minister to go on trial in early February

The trial of former Minister of Agriculture Saša Dragin and his associates accused of financial abuses in the Azotara factory has been scheduled for February 3.

BELGRADE The trial of former Minister of Agriculture Sasa Dragin and his associates accused of financial abuses in the Azotara factory has been scheduled for February 3. The trial will be held before the Special Court in Belgrade and will be open to the public. Ex-minister to go on trial in early February Dragin is now under house arrest, after spending nine months in prison. He was arrested in late November of last year. Five other defendants in the case are also under house arrest, while the remaining 15 have been set free pending the trial's outcome. Owner of the consulting company Ces Mecon Zvonimir Nikezic, who was charged in July, was released from custody on bail of one million euros in real estate. Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime filed charges against Dragin and the others in May, on suspicion that they committed financial abuses that incurred damages of come EUR 25 million to the artificial fertilizer plant, located in the town of Pancevo. They are accused of selling subsidized fertilizers from July 2009 until October 2011, contrary to the regulations of the government of Serbia. Dragin and Nikezic are alleged to have designed a method of selling the subsidized goods through Azotara, and recommended the factory's officials to conduct the sales in this way. Dragin is charged with the criminal offense of abuse of office, and if found guilty could be sent to jail for up to 12 years. In late October, the police filed new charges against the former minister, on suspicion that he allow entry, processing, and storage in Serbia of dangerous substances. Dragin is now under house arrest, after spending nine months in prison. He was arrested in late November of last year.
