BELGRADE The Serbian police launched a country-wide operation dubbed Thunderbolt to apprehend "several hundred drug dealers," the Interior Ministry has told Tanjug. "Thunderbolt (Grom) is a one-day synchronized operation that targets members of organized crime who distribute narcotics," the ministry said. Police arrest "hundreds of drug dealers" Minister of Interior Affairs Ivica Dacic stated on Friday that the police arrested 127 individuals as it moved to break up smuggling rings, and that the suspects have been remanded in detention. Dacic told reporters in the Serbian government that the operation is still underway with the aim of preventing production, distribution and sale of drugs. “This is a blow to the distributive network,” Dacic said and added that this is a part of the comprehensive fierce fight against organized crime, drugs, financial frauds and hooliganism. Dacic noted that 909 sites in the territory of Serbia were searched in Operation Thunderbolt, and added that the operation will continue. He said that the coordinated operation conducted by the police, Prosecutor's Office and the Bureau for Coordination of Security Services led to 134 confiscations and discovery of one laboratory for drug production. The police also seized a number of weapons and drugs, and one murder case was also solved, Dacic said and expressed the expectation that 242 people will be prosecuted. Dacic noted that he is satisfied with the coordination of all relevant services in Operation Thunderbolt, and underscored that the national fight against organized crime and setting up rule of law constitute a priority.
