BELGRADE Aleksandar Vucic has said that the government was "doing all it can to steer the country out of the economic crisis." The leader of the ruling Progressives (SNS) and first deputy prime minister also on Thursday stated that citizens will feel the positive effects of the reforms toward the end of 2014. Vucic campaigns and promises "better life in late 2014" Vucic noted that Serbia was facing "a tough period because in the privatization process, the previous government destroyed all that citizens had created and left not only an empty but also a dilapidated house which needs to be swept clean first." Addressing the citizens in the suburb of Ripanj ahead of the local elections in the Belgrade municipality of Vozdovac, Vucic also "promised that serious reforms would be carried out and that rule of law will be established." He noted that "everything will be done to make sure that hard work and discipline are respected in the country, to prevent anyone from stealing funds from the citizens and to ensure that individuals elected by citizens are in charge instead of letting the country be ran by tycoons." Vucic underscored that the government will fight against "thieves, criminals and tycoons" and that it will defend the interests of Serbia everywhere and at all times. He called on citizens to vote in the elections so that indecent candidates would not have a chance at power. He announced that "several directors of public enterprises" appointed by his party will be dismissed over the next few days, "as the party is not content with their work." "We will show that responsibility is the principle our rule is based on", Vucic told the residents of Pinosava, as he continued to campaign ahead of the elections in Vozdovac. Commenting on economic issues, Vucic denied that the 2014 budget proposal envisaged the highest fiscal deficit to date. "The fiscal deficit is now the lowest, because for the first time a realistic calculation of state revenues and expenditures has been made", he explained. The number of public sector employees has also been established for the first time in fifteen years, he added, and stressed the importance of encouraging the private sector. Vucic emphasized that the citizens "should show understanding for the economic measures carried out by the new Finance Minister Lazar Krstic, who showed exactly where the citizens' money is spent and where it will have to be invested." "For the first time we will have to admit to ourselves the bad moves we made and the changes we will need to make", SNS leader said, adding that "the citizens must be aware that all this will reflect on their standard of living."
